Social Attunement: the construct

Social Attunement is the tendency to perceive other people's emotional states, prioritize harmony, communicate with warmth and adjust your behavior to keep connection. In the ICA it is the SO dimension, part of the Feeling faculty.

What it describes

You notice how others are feeling and read the emotional temperature of a room. You prioritize harmony and connection.

Roles people have long associated with it: the peacemaker, the healer, the diplomat. These are images to make the idea memorable, not categories people belong to.

How the ICA measures it

In each of the 40 situations, one of the four responses reflects Social Attunement. The more often you choose it, the higher your SO score, out of a shared total of 40. A high SO score means it ranks high among your own preferences. It does not mean you have more of it than someone else. See how scores work.

How it relates to the other dimensions

Social Attunement is the whole of the Feeling faculty. It contrasts with Systematic Analysis and often complements Integrative Synthesis in people who read situations as a whole, including the people in them.

How a certified practitioner uses it

A practitioner might use a high Social Attunement ranking to explore how a client keeps a team together under pressure, and when protecting harmony postpones a conversation the team needs.

The professional path covers this in certification.

What the research asks

Whether Social Attunement relates to established measures of agreeableness and interpersonal orientation, and whether it is distinct from general warmth in self-report.

See the protocol.

Profiles that lead with Social Attunement

Every profile ranks all four dimensions. These six rank Social Attunement first; the code shows the full order, strongest first.

Questions

Is Social Attunement a skill?

No. It is a preference: how often you choose responses of this kind when the situation offers alternatives. Skill and preference can differ.

Can Social Attunement change?

Preferences can shift with experience and context. Whether ICA results stay stable over time is one of the questions the research is testing.
