Integrative Synthesis: the construct

Integrative Synthesis is the tendency to perceive patterns across time, integrate several streams of information into one understanding, and receive insight as recognition rather than deduction. In the ICA it is the IS dimension, part of the Thinking faculty (integrative mode).

What it describes

You step back from immediate engagement to let the larger pattern emerge. You often sense where things are heading before others do, and an insight can arrive before you can explain it.

Roles people have long associated with it: the tracker, the astronomer, the strategist. These are images to make the idea memorable, not categories people belong to.

How the ICA measures it

In each of the 40 situations, one of the four responses reflects Integrative Synthesis. The more often you choose it, the higher your IS score, out of a shared total of 40. A high IS score means it ranks high among your own preferences. It does not mean you have more of it than someone else. See how scores work.

How it relates to the other dimensions

Integrative Synthesis shares the Thinking faculty with Systematic Analysis: two routes to understanding, wholes and parts. It contrasts most with Environmental Engagement, which acts on what is in front of you rather than stepping back to see the pattern.

How a certified practitioner uses it

A practitioner might use a high Integrative Synthesis ranking to open a conversation about where a client sees the larger direction, and how they turn that into steps others can follow.

The professional path covers this in certification.

What the research asks

Whether Integrative Synthesis is distinct from Systematic Analysis in people's responses, and how it relates to established holistic and intuitive thinking measures (cognitive style research).

See the protocol.

Profiles that lead with Integrative Synthesis

Every profile ranks all four dimensions. These six rank Integrative Synthesis first; the code shows the full order, strongest first.

Questions

Is Integrative Synthesis a skill?

No. It is a preference: how often you choose responses of this kind when the situation offers alternatives. Skill and preference can differ.

Can Integrative Synthesis change?

Preferences can shift with experience and context. Whether ICA results stay stable over time is one of the questions the research is testing.
